Highlights of 2009
  • The Next Door celebrated "Five Years of Serving Women and Children" and has now served more than 650 women since the first residents arrived in May 2004.
  • 152 women have completed the six month structured curriculum; approximately 180 additional women have stayed at least 90 days.
  • The recidivism rate for women completing the six month program is 14%; for women staying at least 90 days in the program, the rate is 21%. Statewide, it is estimated that at least 65% of women return to incarceration.
  • 82% of residents of The Next Door find employment within 25 business days of admission, and the average number of days from admission to employment is 20.
  • The average hourly pay for residents of The Next Door is $7.53.
  • In 2009, 12 current or former residents of The Next Door enrolled in GED classes, and 4 former residents enrolled in college courses.
  • The Workforce Development Program added 26 new employers who were willing to hire residents of The Next Door. Each new employer employed at least one resident during the year.
  • The Freedom Recovery Community celebrated its Second Anniversary in August 2009 and has served 60 women and 15 children since opening.
  • October 2009 - Terrell Smith, Workforce Development Volunteer, selected as one of five Bank of America "Local Heroes" honoring her contribution as a Job Coach in The Next Door's Workforce Development Program.
  • August 2009 - The Next Door and the Tennessee Office of Criminal Justice Programs announce plans for two new residential transition centers in Chattanooga and Knoxville, Tennessee; anticipated opening in the first quarter of 2010.
  • July 2009 - Linda Leathers, Chief Executive Officer, and Andrea Overby, Board Member, selected as finalists in Center for Nonprofit Management 2009 Salute to Excellence Awards.
  • May 2009 - Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, toured The Next Door Nashville Transitional Residential Center.
  • April 2009 - Cindy Sneed, Chief Clinical Officer, selected as one of 18 national leaders to participate in the Women's Addiction Services Leadership Institute sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
