I want to assure you that racism has no place at The Next Door. I hurt for those who are experiencing grief and loss right now. Our own staff members, clients and our community are experiencing this pain. A little over two weeks ago, I shared a message with our team about the need to continue to be guided by our core values, and to continue to stand strong against any type of racism. Following are excerpts from my message to our team:

Our core values really must guide all of our actions and interactions. As followers of Christ, because of our faith, we believe that we are all created in the image of God and are worthy of love and respect. We want every client and every member of our team to be welcome and cared for, to have a life that is abundantly good (wholeness). To be a part of a healthy community, we need one another. We care for one another. We build healthy community together. I am hopeful that all of this is within reach!
I want to be an encouragement to all of you. I want my words and actions to build all of you up. I want to inspire you all with love and good deeds. Even though it seems that no action I can offer, no words I can speak will resolve the hurt and heaviness felt in these days, I want to continue to soul-search and dig deeper as an organization to support and listen to the voices of our team who have been traumatized by the incidents of the past week.
I look forward to learning more from all of you. Please also feel free to call, stop by or email me if you have other suggestions for consideration. I care deeply for every one of you!
The Next Door’s purpose is to empower women for a lifetime of recovery.  ALL WOMEN. The Next Door has always and will always serve and care for all women in need of treatment services, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion. We will continue to serve and care for all women with great compassion and empathy. We are here for our clients, alumnae and their families whenever they need care and whoever they are.
The Next Door will continue to make hiring decisions without discrimination of any kind. Our leadership team, our Cultural Diversity team, and our Board Executive Committee are working on a thoughtful and sustainable long-term plan to further increase diversity across our organization, to better understand what opportunities we have, and to hold ourselves accountable for the long-term. We began what will be a continuing effort for all of The Next Door, to humbly listen and reflect. This is only the start and we are committed to take the time, effort and work needed by all of us to create meaningful lasting change. I know you will join in these efforts.
